Product Overview

The Beacon™ Chest Seal Vented is the vented version of the Beacon platform — delivering the CoTCCC-preferred vented chest seal treatment in a single IFAK-sized kit. The integrated vent allows air and blood to drain from the chest cavity during exhalation while preventing re-entry during inhalation, reducing the risk of tension pneumothorax converting an open pneumothorax into a life-threatening tension event. The 2024 TCCC Guidelines from CoTCCC specify that vented chest seals should be applied to all open and sucking chest wounds when available.

The Beacon Vented uses the same 6" round hydrogel platform as the Beacon Non-Vented — the transparent backing, the large release tab, the conformable adhesive design, and the vacuum-sealed 4-notch packaging are identical between the two versions. The vented variant adds the vent mechanism, allowing responders to standardize on a single product platform (Beacon) while selecting vented or non-vented format based on wound type and protocol. Function and integrity are preserved when the seal has been folded or rolled during IFAK carry, and the lightweight puncture-resistant packaging protects the seal and adhesive throughout.

The Beacon Vented can be used alone for single-wound presentations, or paired with the Beacon Non-Vented for through-and-through bilateral wound treatment — the two-seal USMC combo approach using the same manufacturer's platform. For organizations that want to standardize on Beacon Medical products for ease of training and logistics, the Beacon platform provides a complete occlusive and vented chest seal capability. See MED-TAC's complete chest & thoracic collection or configure a complete IFAK kit.

Application Instructions

  1. Expose and clear wound: Remove clothing from the chest; wipe away excess blood and moisture.
  2. Open package: Tear at any of the 4 corner notches for rapid single-hand access.
  3. Align vent and apply: For best drainage, position the vent so that gravity assists drainage when possible. Center the seal using the transparent backing to confirm wound alignment. Press firmly from center outward.
  4. Treat exit wound: Apply a second seal (separate pack) to the exit wound if present.
  5. Monitor: Assess respiratory status and SpO₂. If tension develops despite the vented seal, burp the seal using the release tab or proceed to needle decompression per TCCC protocol.

Beacon Vented vs. Beacon Non-Vented: When to Use Each

The Beacon Vented (BCSK-Vent) is the CoTCCC-preferred choice for anterior (front) chest wounds where the vent can function properly. The Beacon Non-Vented (BCSK) is appropriate for posterior (back) wounds where gravity positioning may prevent vent drainage, or as backup when vented seals are unavailable. Pairing one Beacon Vented and one Beacon Non-Vented covers the complete range of through-and-through wound treatment scenarios within a single product family — simplifying training, restocking, and logistics.
