The HyFin® Vent Compact Chest Seal Twin Pack (Item# 10-0042) by North American Rescue is a compact-format, CoTCCC-guideline-aligned vented chest seal system. Two individually packaged 4.75" × 4.75" seals fit in IFAKs without folding — approximately 25% smaller than the standard HyFin Vent — while retaining the same patented 3-channel pressure-relief venting, hydrogel adhesive, and Red-Tip Technology® tear notches of the full-size version.

Product Overview
Tension pneumothorax is the second leading cause of preventable combat death. An open, penetrating chest wound creates a sucking chest wound that allows atmospheric air to enter the pleural space with each breath, progressively collapsing the lung. Without prompt occlusion and venting, this tension builds to cause mediastinal shift, obstructed venous return, and cardiovascular collapse within minutes. The HyFin® Vent Compact Chest Seal Twin Pack addresses this threat with the same proven 3-channel venting architecture as the full-size HyFin Vent — in a form factor approximately 25% smaller and purpose-built for IFAK carry.
The compact seal measures 4.75" × 4.75" — small enough to drop into standard IFAK pouches without folding or creasing that could compromise the adhesive. The perforated twin packaging allows the responder to open a single seal at a time, keeping the second sterile until needed for the exit wound. The three-channel vent design allows accumulated pleural air to escape during exhalation while sealing against the skin during inhalation to prevent air entry. If any two channels become obstructed with blood or debris, the third continues to function — a critical fail-safe in combat or mass-casualty environments. The Red-Tip Technology® tear notch provides a tactile and visual cue for one-handed, glove-on opening even under stress.
Per the 2024 TCCC Guidelines published by the Committee on Tactical Combat Casualty Care (CoTCCC), all open and sucking chest wounds should be treated by immediately applying a vented chest seal. If a vented seal is unavailable, a non-vented seal should be used and the casualty monitored for tension pneumothorax. The HyFin Vent Compact's dual-pack format enables simultaneous treatment of entry and exit wounds — the standard of care for all penetrating thoracic trauma. Explore MED-TAC's full range of chest & thoracic supplies or configure a complete IFAK kit around this seal.
Application Instructions
- Expose and dry the wound site: Remove clothing and wipe away excess blood and moisture. The hydrogel adhesive is formulated for adverse conditions, but clearing surface contaminants maximizes bond strength.
- Open via Red-Tip notch: Tear the foil package at the notch; do not touch the adhesive surface. The perforated design allows access to one seal while keeping the second sealed.
- Center over wound: Align the vent tab away from the wound. Center the seal over the injury and press firmly from the center outward to eliminate air gaps.
- Treat entry and exit wounds: Apply the second seal to the exit wound using the same technique. Always address both wounds.
- Monitor and burp if needed: Watch for signs of worsening tension pneumothorax (increasing respiratory distress, falling SpOâ‚‚, tracheal deviation). If tension recurs, lift the seal edge to vent accumulated air ("burping"), then re-seal.
Why Vented Matters
CoTCCC guidelines explicitly recommend vented chest seals as the first-line choice for penetrating chest trauma precisely because non-vented seals — while effective at occluding the wound — provide no relief pathway if tension pneumothorax develops. The 3-channel vent design of the HyFin Vent Compact eliminates this risk. Compared to the standard HyFin Vent Twin Pack, the Compact format uses identical technology with a smaller footprint, making it the preferred choice when kit space is at a premium — particularly for compact IFAK configurations and plate-carrier medical pouches.
All products sourced from the actual brand manufacturer or authorized master distributors. CoTCCC recommendation status verified where applicable. Ships from MED-TAC International, Pembroke Pines, FL — clinician-founded, veteran-led, SDVOSB-certified.
