The R-SICK represents NAR's response to a gap in Prolonged Field Care (PFC) capability: the need for a comprehensive, rapidly deployable surgical instrument system that can support complex, emergent procedures in austere environments without access to an operating room. Traditional surgical trays are heavy, bulk-packaged, and not optimized for rapid deployment under field conditions. The R-SICK's rollup organizer format allows full instrument visualization and sequential access — the provider sees every instrument in order before making an incision.
The sequential layout is designed around the workflow of PFC surgical procedures: incision (scalpels, knife handle), tissue spreading (retractors, forceps), damage control (hemostatic forceps, sutures), and closure (needle holders, sutures). Procedures enabled include surgical cricothyrotomy (Trousseau dilator, tracheal hook), major hemorrhage control, and field amputation using the included Gigli saw blades and handles. REBOA proceduralists may use the kit's vascular access instruments and suture materials for sheathmanagement and closure.
